WE WERE ON the bank within five minutes.
âHow did they do this?â I was dumbfounded. âThatâs like ... five-hundred feet of bank containing bloody runes. How did they even manage that?â
âIâm not sure I want to know.â Kade ran his hand over his close-cropped hair. âWe have got to get rid of this.â
âAnd we have to do it fast,â I said.
âI have an idea,â Raven called out. She was still in her pajamas, her long silver hair standing up in a million different directions.
âI guess you were having a lazy morning too,â I noted as she joined me. âDid Luke at least knock before barging into your bedroom?â
âNellie woke me by throwing water balloons at my trailer.â
I didnât want to laugh â this situation wasnât funny â but I couldnât help myself. âDid he say why?â
âHe was afraid to knock. Something about British accents and chaps giving him an ulcer.â
This was a conversation for another time. âWhatâs your idea?â
âNaida. She can control the water.â
I grasped what she was suggesting. âWe canât let her get overzealous.â
âWeâll have the mage here to make sure that doesnât happen,â Raven said, inclining her head toward Zoe. âWeâll clear everyone else off the beach and let them handle it.â
âOkay.â I reached out and snagged Sami by the shoulders as the teenager wandered by. âWhere is your father? He needs to take you away from here.â
Samiâs glare was withering. âI can get myself off the beach.â
âWhere is he?â I asked a second time.
âHe had somewhere to be this morning so itâs just Mom and me.â
âTake her up,â Zoe instructed, grim as she regarded the mess. âIf your pixie can fix this and I can help, itâs best to leave just the two of us here. Weâre less likely to attract attention.â
âI think the huge waves sheâs going to create will attract attention no matter what.â
âYes, but I donât want Sami around them.â
I nodded in understanding as Cole appeared. He grabbed the teenager around the waist and dumped her over his shoulder. âCome with me, little firecracker. Weâll get some breakfast into you.â
âNo way.â Sami struggled against him. âI want to watch.â
âYou can watch from the fairgrounds.â
âThat sounds like zero fun.â
âIt will be fun. I promise.â
Sami was silent for a beat, but I didnât miss the mischievous smile on her face as I started to follow. âWill you take your shirt off again?â
âNo, because I donât want your father to rip my head off.â
âI think you could take him.â
âI donât want to find out.â
âIâll take my shirt off again,â Luke offered. âBut you have to revamp your list.â
âYou manipulating the list isnât fair,â Sami countered.
âI donât care about fair. I only want to win.â
She cocked her head, considering, and then nodded. âOkay, but I want a good breakfast.â
âYour wish is my command.â
